Best UK Christmas Markets
October is drawing to a close and Halloween is almost behind us, which means that Christmas is just around the corner! From November, Christmas Markets start to pop up all around the country and little pockets of our towns and cities are turned into magical winter wonderlands. Here’s our roundup of the best Christmas Market destinations in the UK.
1 – Bath
Bath Christmas Market is an award-winning festive extravaganza. From 23rd November to 10th December, over 200 chalets take up residence in the Abbey Churchyard, spreading out into the streets beyond. With this stunning city-centre location and the wonderful architecture of Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths as a backdrop, it’s no wonder the Bath Christmas Market, now in its 17th year, is continuing to collect accolades.
2 – Edinburgh
Edinburgh is famous for its summer Fringe festival so we know they can put on a good show! The electric atmosphere and tinge of excitement that suffuses the city in August, is also palpable during Edinburgh’s Christmas six-week spectacular. Running from 17th November right up until 6th January with a host of seasonal events as well as the traditional market stalls, this is the big one. Expect mouth-watering food, enough gifts to fill Santa’s workshop, fairground rides, ice skating and more.
3 – London
While the crowds flock to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, the Wintertime at Southbank Centre presents a calmer, classier Christmas affair. Enjoying views of the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, you can browse the gifts on sale as you stroll through the stalls that line the South Bank of the Thames. Of course, the food offering is exceptional with indulgent sweet and savoury treats from around the world, which you can wash down with a Winter Cider from the ever popular Rekorderlig Cider Lodge.
4 – Newcastle
Newcastle’s International Christmas Market (17th November - 10th December) is a hidden gem not to be missed. Running from the square around the Monument and dripping down onto Grainger Street and Grey Street, sellers from across Europe set up stalls selling utterly delectable goods as well as the usual arts and crafts. This continental market will set your taste buds on fire with paella from Spain, crêpes from France, currywurst from Germany, waffles from Holland and much more. If tucking into a bowl of creamy, melted cheese, hot potatoes and smokey bacon is your thing (and why wouldn’t it be?) you’ll love the authentic tartiflette!
5 – York
The historic streets of York, bustling with activity and immersed in tradition, come alive during the wonderful winter months. St Nicholas Fair, full of the scent of spiced mulled wine and roasting chestnuts, really makes the most of the city’s charm, transforming its medieval streets into a Christmas fairy tale. Meandering through the magical market stalls of St Nicholas Fair, which runs from 16th November to 22nd December, makes Christmas shopping a truly special experience.
